Belarus: put an ultimatum Lithuania

Belarus may block the transit of goods to Lithuania, if the latter refuses to transport the Belarusian potassium on its territory. The representative of Belaruskalia, Irina Savchenko, was told about such an ultimatum office in an interview with Lithuanian television and radio company LRT.

She noted that the termination of the transit of Belarusian potassium is a violation of international obligations under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.

“We are confident that most of our customers and fertilizer buyers will turn to court if they remain without our goods and suffer significant losses due to the actions of Lithuania,” said Savchenko. They will be forced to buy fertilizers at higher prices, the amount of claims in this case will reach billions of the euro, said the representative of Belaruskalia.

If Belarus stops transit, the Lithuanian railways will remain without work, Savchenko believes. She also called the transit of Belarusian fertilizers through Lithuania “Humanitarian Corridor”. Shuttle shipments will exacerbate the situation with hunger in the world, she is sure.

In Lithuania, the Minister of Transport Marius Skodis has previously resigned due to the inability to fulfill sanctions against Belarus. Despite the US ban, the transit of Belarusian fertilizers through Lithuania continues.

According to US sanctions against Belarus, the export of fertilizers from the republic should be discontinued. However, the deliveries continued due to the fact that Minsk in November transferred advance payment by Lithuanian railways.
