Harmful effects of health unemployment refurbished by a study

Four associations, at the origin of this research, plead for the establishment of a “periodic medical visit throughout the job search path”.

Unemployment is a public health problem that requires both preventive and curative actions. Already set out in previous reports, this imperative is reaffirmed in a study made on Tuesday, December 14 and conducted on the initiative of several associations. It brings again the magnitude of the damage that the deprivation of activity causes the physical and psychological state of the persons concerned.

At the origin of this initiative, there are four organizations that are known for their involvement in the field of social: forces women, the solidarity tie, new solidarities in the face of unemployment, a long-term unemployed zero territories. The survey is based on a survey that 977 unemployed people participated from March to June. The selected sample is not representative, especially because it has 80% of women, which is very superior in the place they occupy in the population of enrollment at Pôle emploi. Given these methodological limits, the results of the research, expressed in percentages, are fragile and can hardly be given as such. Nevertheless, it emerges interesting trends to evoke.

Those who say they have seen a degradation of their health since they are looking for a position constitute a minority, whose weight is significant. The percentage of individuals who observe a negative evolution of their state is higher when they have been without activity for more than three years.

Several proposals

Not surprisingly, unemployment carries a violent blow to the morale of women and men who are victims. Many respondents feel isolated and say they have “a less good picture” of themselves since they are looking for work. The fact of being unemployed “promotes depression, anxiety and anxiety”, while contributing to the emergence of addictive practices (alcohol, tobacco).

This research also shows the difficulties encountered by some enrolled in Pôle emploi to go to the doctor. A small minority explains, indeed, have renounced care or medical examinations “for financial reasons”, while it needed it. A painful situation for stakeholders, which has, moreover, “long-term consequences of public health expenditure”.

For the survey sponsors, “the health care of these people is a primary challenge” which must be raised promptly. With this in mind, several proposals are made: “Free and regular access to a psychological help service”, introducing a “periodic medical visit throughout the job search course”, free supply of “products of Emergency and basic hygiene “(female protections, dental care …). The four associations also advocate to simplify the granting of the complementary solidarity health, a device that helps people with modest resources pay for medical expenses.
