This time should be the right one. The Swedish Parliament must again vote, Monday, November 29, for the designation of Magdalena Andersson as a new premier, after his chaotic resignation last week.

So far Minister of Finance, the head of the Social Democrats had been elected, Wednesday morning, the first woman premier of the Nordic country, but had had to resign seven hours later at the end of a nightmare day marked by a defeat on his budget, followed by the departure of government environmentalists. A situation that the President of Parliament Andreas Norlen has also said “regret” after this day.

After having again surveyed party leaders, the President of the Riksdag, the Unique Chamber of Swedish Parliament, had concluded Thursday that their intentions were unchanged as to the election of the future Prime Minister. The three parties that allowed his arrival to power have indeed known that they would again allow his election. It will therefore again submit Magdalena Andersson to a parliament vote, scheduled from 13 hours local.

Unless last minute surprise, this 54-year-old economist should be invested head of government for good this time, succeeding the Representative Prime Minister Stefan Löfven.

Political Domino game

Although the space of a few hours at this post with a single margin voice before finally having to resign, it was not officially entry into operation. This traditionally intervenes after the presentation of the government to the king, who should have normally intervene on Friday.

Elected after several days of delicate negotiations, Magdalena Andersson was the victim of a painful game of political domino. If it had been assured in extremis the supports necessary to reach the power, thanks to an agreement with the left party to increase the small retreats, the party of the center, dissatisfied with the concessions made at the left wing, withdrew its Support for the budget, without blocking its accession in power.

Consequence: the same parliament who had elected it in the morning put his budget in minority in the afternoon and adopted that of the right opposition, prepared for the first time with the extreme right of Democrats of Sweden (SD). In the stride, its ecologist ally, only other party of the minority government coalition, slammed the door, judging unacceptable to govern with a budget bearing the seal of the far right. This decision then forced me me Andersson to make his apron barely acquired.

An unpublished scenario

“There is a constitutional practice that a coalition government resigns when a party leaves it. I do not want to lead a government whose legitimacy is called into question,” she explained at a conference press.

Although used to the complexities of his parliamentarism, the Nordic country had never experienced such a scenario. The succession at the head of Sweden is less than one year of the legislative legislative of September 2022, which are tightly announced.

Magdalena Andersson will have from here to convince voters to convince. With some 25% in the polls, the Social Democratic Party keeps its rank of Swedish’s first political formation, but is close to its historic floors. It will have to counter its great rival, the Conservative Party of Moderates, in a new configuration. The latter came closer to the extreme right of the Democrats of Sweden and is now ready to govern with his support in Parliament.
