Migration crisis: tension mounts on border between Poland and Belarus

In Warsaw, the government fears a spokesman “military escalation”, while the situation around the crossing points is chaotic.

Hundreds of tents forming a vast makeshift camp, thousands of men, women and children huddled together and attempts increasingly violent force barriers and barbed son of rolls of border European Union (EU): the voltage at the Polish-Belarusian border has grown steadily throughout the day on Monday 8th November. By early afternoon, many online videos unveiled columns of hundreds of people heading on foot towards the checkpoint Kuznica, a border village near the town of Grodno Belarus.

On Monday evening, the Polish authorities assured that between 3000 and 4000 people currently find in this border area, the Belarusian side, only fifteen thousand are still scattered across the country. This would mainly Iraqi Kurds and Syrians. Shears, shovels but also cut trees used as battering rams were used to force the border barriers. Polish guards, supported by the police and army have used tear gas.

According to several accounts, Belarusian border guards opened fire in the air to force migrants to move forward. On some videos, we see masked gunmen provide logistical support and provide tools to refugees. The border area on the Polish side being declared a state of emergency area, nor journalists or nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) are allowed to go there. The information essentially manage videos recorded by the Polish authorities or Belarus, or rare activists who managed to get there.

The attempt to destabilize Lithuania and Poland, launched in mid-August by the regime of Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko with the opening of a vast migratory corridor to the EU from the Middle East, has a new dimension. Hitherto attempts to pass the “green border”, through the thick and rainforest Podlaskie, proved to be particularly difficult, because of violent rejections charged by Polish border guards. Now with the approach of winter, migrants form large groups around a regular crossing. The Polish authorities say they have evidence that the transfer of these people was organized by the Belarusian authorities.
