Emelyanov headed the work on the fuel systems of a number of aircraft, including Su-25, Su-27 and T-4. He developed a new method of protecting fuel tanks from an explosion, which was introduced on several OKB aircraft. Also, the aircraft designer participated in the development of new pumping systems for pumping fuel, which is used in Su-27, Su-30, IL-62 and T-22.

In 1991, Igor Emelyanov became the deputy chief designer, and in 1992 he headed the work on the Su-30 fighter. Emelyanov also worked on export aircraft modifications.
