After Europe, France. Monday, October 4th, the European Medicines Agency had given the green light to the administration of a third dose of the Pfizer-Biontech vaccine than 18 years. Wednesday, the High Authority of Health (HAS), responsible for proposing a vaccine strategy to the government, recommended that the recall, so far reserved for more than 65 years, to all health personnel and the entourage of the immunocompromised people.

More specifically, the has invites the government to target health professionals, the medico-social sector and extensive health transportation, or 3.5 million individuals, as well as the families of ill or not protected by the Vaccine, or 350,000 to 400,000 people. They will be added to the approximately 14 million more than 65 years already concerned by the vaccinal reminder.

To justify its recommendation, the High Authority of Health emphasizes that the effectiveness of vaccination decreases gradually from the sixth month following the second injection. “The latest studies on real-life data confirm this decrease”, insists the has. The independent body relies mainly on studies in Israel, a pioneering country of vaccination, and therefore the first to have seen the phenomenon.

“This decrease in protection seems to be a lower efficiency of vaccines vis-à-vis the delta variant and a gradual decrease in time of the efficiency of the scheme with two doses”, continues HAS. Nevertheless, it notes “an effectiveness against serious forms that remains at a high level”. Throughout the world, hospital beds, and more particularly those of resuscitation services, remain occupied by non-vaccinated people.

“Personal and collective protection”

Why again a third dose? For the elderly, because they cumulate two disadvantages. Vaccinated in priority, between January and April, they are the first to undergo the decline in protection. They are also the most threatened by severe forms, even with two doses received. However, Israeli studies, analyzing data by more than 1 million people over 60, have shown that the risk of developing a serious form of Covid-19 was 19.5 times lower among those who had received a Reminder five months after their second injection only in those who had not benefited. A particularly important difference. It is, moreover, what had led the has, then the government, to launch, in August, the reminder campaign among over 65 years, without waiting for the opinion of the European Medicines Agency.
