Fire broke out in one of the blocks of this prison on the outskirts of the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. The number of prisoners in this block exceeded the norm three times. Instead of 38 prisoners there were 122 people. Basically, convicts for crimes associated with narcotic substances.

Initially, rescuers counted 41 dead, but then three prisoners died in the hospital because of heavy burns. Thus, the total number of victims increased to 44. According to the administration of a correctional institution, all the dead were prisoners. It is noted that this is the most deadly fire in Indonesia in recent years. According to the assumption of rescuers, the fire could be caused due to electricity malfunction in the prison building.

This incident opened a discussion in Indonesia about the revision of anti-drug legislation. According to activists, strict laws of Indonesia lead to the fact that the prisons sits a disproportionate number of people. Many of those who condemn the crimes with drugs are small consumers.
