Pregnosed inevitable glacier catastrophe

German scientists and the UK predicted that in the future melting, Greenland glaciers will pass the point of non-repayment, after which destabilization of the ice shield on the island becomes inevitable. The catastrophic situation caused by global warming is reported in the article published in the Journal Proceedings of The National Academy of Sciences.

melting reduces the height of the ice cover, and it means that the surface of the shield will be exposed to more and higher temperatures, because at sea level the air warms up stronger. This is non-linearly accelerates melting, resulting in a turning point, after which even the lack of further global warming will not stop the degradation of the shield, raising the sea level and slowing the atlantic meridional circulation (AMOC).

researchers found out that glaciers in Central and Western Greenland, the Jacobshavn pool, approach the critical transition. It is predicted that in the very near future ice shield will lose a substantial part of the mass.

It is believed that the slowdown of AMOC can contribute to more extreme weather in Europe, including the strengthening of winter storms, summer droughts and heat. The east coast of the United States will become more prone to floods by weakening the effect, due to which large volumes of water in Golfstrum deviate east due to the power of Coriolis. According to forecasts, by 2100 Golf Stream can weaken by 34-45 percent, which will make it even more unstable.
