April 26 The largest faction of the European Parliament is the European People’s Party (EPN) – offered to turn off Russia from SWIFT. The High Representative of the EU on Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrel later recognized that the EU cannot do this, as to prevent the construction of the North Stream-2 gas pipeline.
Member of the Federation Council Vladimir Dzhabarov said that the country is ready to duplicate SWIFT. “I wonder how they will pay with us for petroleum products – cash in suitcases to carry?” – he said. Dzhabarov added that the European Parliament turned into the “focus of Russophobia.”
SWIFT is an international system of information transfer and payments between banks. Over 11 thousand large organizations in 200 countries are connected to it. Russia is one of the most active participants in the system.
