The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will check the congressmen for possible assistance to the participants in the storming of the Capitol. This is reported by CNN TV channel.
The department plans to establish whether one of the legislators could accidentally or deliberately help the protesters. The FBI obtained evidence of contacts between congressmen and participants in the assault in the days preceding the riots. In addition, the agency has tapes of conversations between alleged rioters in which they discuss their ties with members of Congress, whose names are not disclosed.
However, the FBI has yet to press charges against specific legislators. If investigators suspect that one of the congressmen or their assistants helped the participants in the assault, then they can request a warrant to gain access to the content of their conversations. So far, no such steps have been taken, the channel notes.
