EU urged to maintain “limited engagement” with Russia

The European Union must maintain limited engagement with Russia, said EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell. RIA Novosti reports.

According to him, we are talking about such issues as the Iranian “nuclear dossier”, the fight against climate change. At the same time, he noted that Europe needs Russia for the supply of energy resources. “Russia is a major supplier for many European countries,” he stressed.

Borrell added that when the EU points out “a failure to comply with obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights, they [the Russian authorities] block everything and do not want to interact.”

The head of EU diplomacy stressed that issues of interaction with the Russian side will be discussed at the EU summit in March 2021.

On February 7, Borrell announced the separation of Russia from the European Union. He explained that he had come to this conclusion after a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and “a message from the Russian authorities during this visit.” In his opinion, Moscow does not want to use the opportunity for a more constructive dialogue. The Russian Foreign Ministry was surprised by this statement, noting that Borrell’s assessment of the results of his visit to Moscow contrasts with his own words said in Russia.
