Another family owed $ 3.8 thousand, while for the entire previous year it paid only $ 1.2 thousand on electricity bills. Another man has to pay $ 17,000, up from $ 600 in electricity bills last month.
It is clarified that we are talking about those Americans whose tariff is not fixed, but floating and depends on the market price. During the cold weather, the wholesale cost of electricity jumped from $ 50 to $ 9,000 due to increased demand. As RIA Novosti notes, American homes are usually heated by air conditioning.
In February of this year, several states were covered by abnormal weather: frost and strong winds. The snowstorm left more than three million Americans without electricity. The largest power outages occurred in Texas. Utilities said power outages were “a last resort to maintain the reliability of the electrical system as a whole.”
