Russia has invested another billion dollars in US national debt

In December 2020, Russia again increased its investments in the US national debt, bringing their volume to $ 6,011 billion, according to the data of the US Treasury.

Of this amount, 1.2 billion are long-term bonds, and $ 4.8 billion are short-term. Thus, after a sharp sale of securities in November, Russia has almost returned to the October level of investments.

The total volume of investments in the US national debt of all countries and international organizations is 7.021 trillion dollars. Japan remains the largest holder with 1.251 trillion, followed by China (excluding Hong Kong) with 1.072 trillion. The UK remains the leader in Europe – $ 440 billion.

Russia in recent years has not been one of the largest holders of the US government debt. If in 2010 the volume of investments reached a maximum of 170 billion, then since April 2018, under the threat of sanctions, Moscow has decided to get rid of American government bonds as much as possible. In February last year, their volume was $ 12.58 billion, twice as much as at present.
