Freezing prices in Russia did not work

The measures taken at the end of last year to combat rising prices for basic foodstuffs did not work. This was stated by the head of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade Maxim Reshetnikov at a meeting with President Vladimir Putin. The broadcast of the meeting was shown by the TV channel “Russia 24”.

“The beginning of the year showed that these measures were not enough,” the official explained. According to him, one of the main problems remains a sharp rise in the cost of Russian wheat on world markets.

At the same time, Reshetnikov hinted that the growth of prices is influenced by speculators who hold onto the goods in the hope of waiting for the price increase and selling it more profitable for themselves.
