Mother of eight children suspected of storming Capitol

In the United States, the mother of eight children, Rachel Powell, was detained on suspicion of involvement in the storming of the Capitol building on January 6 in Washington. CBS News reported this on Friday, February 5, citing federal authorities.

According to the TV channel, FBI officers searched Powell’s house in search of evidence that could open a criminal case against her. Powell’s neighbors said they had not seen the woman and her children for over a week.

The woman was detained on Thursday evening, February 4. She must stand trial. She has been charged with several charges, including forced entry and hooliganism, obstruction and looting of state property. The charges are based on a certain video, where allegedly Powell, with a loudspeaker in his hands, distributes instructions to participants in the storming of the Capitol, and together with other protesters, tries to knock out a window with a ram.

Earlier, The Wall Street Journal disclosed the source of funding for the rally in support of former US President Donald Trump. As the newspaper managed to establish, Fancelli, among them was one of the largest donors of the election campaign of the former American leader Julie Jenkins Fancelli. Her family, which owns the supermarket chain Publix, allocated about 300 thousand dollars for the event out of the total amount of 500 thousand spent on organizing the event. According to the newspaper, the American TV presenter Alex Jones, known for his far-right beliefs, helped to raise funds for Fancelli.

On January 6, Republican protesters stormed the Capitol building and surrounded the Senate Hall. The Senate and the House of Representatives interrupted a meeting at which it was planned to approve the results of the last elections. During the protests, police detained nearly 70 rioters, killing five. On January 14, the US House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump in the wake of the riots in Washington.
