In the United States, a woman was executed in federal prison for the first time in almost 70 years. Writes about it Reuters.
52-year-old Lisa Montgomery was executed by lethal injection. This is the first execution of a woman at the federal level since 1953. Montgomery’s lawyer called the execution vicious and illegal, since the convict allegedly suffered from a serious mental illness.
Montgomery’s execution has already been postponed twice: first due to the fact that lawyers were infected with the coronavirus, then – due to the fact that the execution of the sentence was postponed by the judge.
In 2007, a Kansas state court found a woman guilty of murdering a pregnant woman who was eight months old, and of ripping open her belly and taking her baby. Montgomery committed the crime in 2004 in Skidmore, Missouri. The victim was 23-year-old Bobbie Jo Stinnett. The perpetrator came to her home under the pretext of buying a puppy. Montgomery attacked her and strangled her with a rope, after which she cut out the premature fetus with a kitchen knife. She took the girl with her and later tried to pass off as her child.
This is the 11th execution since the beginning of 2020. The decision to return the death penalty to the federal level was made in the summer of 2019. Prior to this, cases of the death penalty were related to the decisions of local authorities.
