Assembly of hull of vacuum unit for testing Orel spacecraft is nearing completion

At the Vostochny cosmodrome, by the contractor of the Center for the Operation of Ground-Based Space Infrastructure Facilities (part of the Roscosmos State Corporation), the Industrial Technologies company, the assembly of the vacuum unit body is being completed in the warehouse of the blocks of the unified technical complex.

It is designed to ensure tightness tests of units, systems and compartments of spacecraft and manned transport vehicles. The diameter of the vacuum unit is 9 meters and the weight is over 130 tons. The contractor’s specialists have assembled the main body parts by now. After the completion of all work on the assembly of the case, the specialists will begin the installation of technological systems.

The vacuum unit and the launch pad for the launch complex of the Angara space rocket complex were delivered to the Vostochny cosmodrome in September 2020 by the Northern Sea Route. A barge with technological equipment arrived at the Amur GPP berth on September 3 of the same year. Operations for unloading and transporting technological equipment from the temporary berth to the Vostochny cosmodrome took place in stages and took five days. The vacuum unit and large parts of the launch pad were transported as safely as possible on 7 road trains.
